Michael Joseph Jackson (Gary, 29 août 1958 – Los Angeles, 25 juin 2009), est un chanteur, danseur-chorégraphe, auteur-compositeur-interprète et homme d'affaires américain. Septième d'une famille de neuf enfants, il commença sa carrière professionnelle à l'âge de onze ans au sein des Jackson Five, puis sa carrière solo en 1971 tout en restant membre du groupe. Surnommé par la suite « The King of Pop »], il sortit six albums studio figurant parmi les plus vendus au monde : Off the Wall (1979), Thriller (1982), Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991), HIStory (1995) et Invincible (2001).

Au début des années 1980, Michael Jackson devint une figure majeure de la musique pop et l'une des plus célèbres du XXe siècle. Les courts-métrages comme Beat It, Billie Jean ou Thriller donnèrent un nouvel élan aux vidéo-clips musicaux. Au cours de ses concerts, vidéos et apparitions publiques, il popularisa largement de nombreux pas de danse, dont le Moonwalk, qui devint sa signature. Son style vocal et musical a influencé beaucoup d'autres artistes de hip-hop, pop et R'n'B.

Michael Jackson a révolutionné l'industrie de la musique, notamment en concevant des clips musicaux comparables à des courts-métrages ou encore des mini-films, notamment pour le clip Thriller, qui dure 13 minutes et 41 secondes.


Au cours de sa carrière, Michael Jackson battit nombre de records de l'industrie du disque. Les estimations du total de ses ventes sont estimées à plus de 750 millions, ce qui le classe parmi les plus gros vendeurs d'albums de tous les temps. Thriller, dont les estimations des ventes varient entre 65 et 118 millions, est quant à lui l'album le plus vendu de l'histoire de la musique. Il remporta plus de prix que n'importe quel autre artiste[11] et fut élu Artiste du Millénaire aux World Music Awards en 2000.

Michael Jackson récolta et donna plus de 400 millions de dollars pour des œuvres caritatives, notamment grâce à sa tournée Dangerous World Tour, mais son image publique a été considérablement ternie à cause de certains aspects de sa vie privée, notamment son goût pour la chirurgie esthétique, son mode de vie excentrique et deux accusations d'abus sexuel sur mineur, pour lesquelles il fut respectivement relaxé et acquitté. Ses deux mariages et ses trois enfants furent également à l'origine de polémiques, notamment sur sa paternité.

D'après le Livre Guinness des records, il était jusqu'à sa mort l'artiste vivant le plus connu au monde.

Sa mort donna lieu à une vague d'émotion planétaire sans précédent ainsi qu'à une cérémonie publique à la hauteur de l'artiste, retransmise en mondovision et suivie par plus d'un milliard de personnes dans le monde.

La cérémonie hommage à Michael Jackson, au Staples Center de los Angeles, s'est achevée à 21h40 (heure française), avec l'apparition de Paris Katherine, la fille de Michael Jackson, venue déclarer : "Depuis que je suis née, papa a été le meilleur père que l'on puisse imaginer, et je veux juste dire que je l'aime tellement".

Enlacée par Janet Jackson, l'une des soeurs du roi de la pop, Paris Katherine a ensuite quitté la scène où étaient réunis l'ensemble des participants, qui venaient d'entonner les tubes We are the world et Heal the world. La surprise était de taille, tant Paris Katherine, 11 ans, et ses deux frères, Prince Michael, 12 ans, et Prince Michael II, 7 ans, ont toujours été maintenus loin des projecteurs par leur père et leur famille.
